Traços biográficos do Coronel José Barbosa Ferraz, um dos mais influentes cidadãos na sociedade piracicabana das primeiras décadas do Século XX. Legou a Piracicaba dois magníficos edifícios que idealizou e fez construir: o “Palacete Barbosa”, destinado à sede do Clube Piracicabano ao qual pertencia, e o Teatro São José, considerado, na época, a maior casa de espetáculos do interior paulista. Após a sua morte, os membros do clube adquiriram os dois edifícios à viúva, Carolina Silveira Mello. O Clube passou a denominar-se “Coronel Barbosa”, em homenagem ao seu idealizador. O teatro, por sua vez, foi transformado em salão de bailes e eventos do próprio clube. Esses edifícios servem à cidade até os dias atuais. Tombados pelo município, constituem parte da história social e cultural da cidade, um testemunho do ciclo áureo do florescimento das artes em Piracicaba.

Abstract
Biographical sketches of Colonel José Barbosa Ferraz, one of the more influential citizens of Piracicaba during the first decades of 20th century. He bequeathed to Piracicaba two magnificient buildings that he planned and constructed: Palacete Barbosa and destined it to be the seat of the Clube Piracicabano, to which he belonged, and also the theater São José, which was considered in those times the bigest show house in the interior of the State of São Paulo. After his death, the members of the Club acquired both buildings from the widow Carolina Silveira Mello and the Club received the name of Coronel Barbosa, as a homage to whom had conceived it. The theater was transformed into a ball room and a meeting place for the club. Both these buildings serve the city until the present days and were preserved by the municipal authority as part of social and cultural history of city, to witness the golden cycle of the flourishing arts in Piracicaba.

In this article we analyze João de Minas’ book that was forgotten by himself in the author’s worklist, entitled “Sangue de Ilusões”. We tried to relate the reason of this oblivion to his general historical context.

O estudo de diversos documentos madeirenses e flamengos dá uma nova iluminação sobre a genealogia dos primeiros Lemes em Madeira, Lisboa e Bruges. Após algumas certezas, encontradas nos documentos estudados, podemos concluir com uma grande verossimilhança a necessidade de confundir Martim Leme “o moço” de Madeira e Martin Lem “de jonghe” de Bruges, assim como Antônio Leme cavaleiro da casa del rei e Antônio Leme marido de Catarina de Barros, ambos filhos de Martim Leme e Leonor Rodrigues. Os erros dos genealogistas antigos são a origem dos erros em cascata e de especulações genealógicas que podemos tentar corrigir. Entre elas, a existência de um Martim Leme que habitou Funchal é muito duvidosa e seu casamento com Maria Adão é cronologicamente inverossímil.

Abstract
The Madeiran and Flemish documents study gives a new illumination on the genealogy of the first Lemes in Madere, Lisbon and Bruges. After some certainties, found in studied documents, we can conclude with a great probability the necessity to confuse Martim Leme “o moço” from Madere and Martin Lem “de jonghe” from Bruges, as well as Antônio Leme knight of the king’s house and Antônio Leme husband of Catarina de Barros, both children of Martim Leme and Leonor Rodrigues. The mistakes of the old genealogists are the origin of mistakes in cascade and genealogical speculations that we can try to correct. Between them, the existence of a Martim Leme living in Funchal is very doubtful and his marriage with Maria Adão is chronologically incredible.

There are also a few records that prove the presence of some of its members in the original village since the end of the 14th century;

A família Mesquita é uma das mais importantes no Brasil. É uma centenária dinastia de jornalistas que publicam o jornal O Estado de S. Paulo. São liberais no estilo inglês. Durante a Monarquia foram republicanos e abolicionistas. Opuseram-se ao Fascismo e ao Comunismo. Hoje defendem a livre iniciativa. Apesar de católicos conservadores seus detratores lembram uma possível origem cristã-nova. Este ensaio analisa a documentação e a genealogia de Francisco Mesquita e seu relacionamento com a cultura cristã-nova.

Abstract
The Mesquita family is one of the most important Brazilian families. They are, since a hundred years ago, a dynasty of journalists who publish the major Brazilian newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo. One can say they are liberals in the British style. During the Monarchy, they were Republicans and Abolitionists. Later they were against Fascism and Communism. Today they are a favor of free economy. Even knowing they were conservative Catholics, their detractors usually refer to a probable New-Christian origin of the Mesquita family. In the quest to tell this essay we gathered all available documentation and sketched a genealogy of the descendants of Francisco Mesquita, while using the family history as background and telling the relationship of this family with the Marrano culture.
